Synopsis

The Great Gatsby is a book, created by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925 and is set in New York City and on Long Island, in two areas known as "West Egg" and "East Egg". The Great Gatsby is the Journey of Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota, who moves to New York City in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. Nick rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, a wealthy but unfashionable area populated by the new rich, a group who have made their fortunes too recently to have established social connections and who are prone to luxurious displays of wealth. As Nick Carraway arrives to his new home, he is yet to meet his next-door neighbour, a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lives in a large Gothic mansion and throws extravagant and lush parties every Saturday night.

As the summer progresses, Nick drives out to East Egg one quiet evening for dinner with one of his cousins, Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom. As the evening proceeds, Daisy and Tom introduce Nick to Jordan Baker a young, gentle woman with whom Nick starts a romantic relationship with. Soon after returning, Nick recieves an invitiation to one of Gatsby's lavish parties where he runs into Jordan Baker and meets Gatsby himself. As the year develops, Gatsby and Carraway form a unique friendship until the death of Gatsby causes Nick to go into shutdown mode where he ends his relationship with Jordan Baker and moves back midwest to escape the disgust he feels for the people surrounding Gatsby’s life.

Scene Deconstruction

An individual may encounter a series of consequences and learn about themselves, others and the world that they're in , however, it is only experienced after an obstacle or challenge comes into place that they may feel the impact and effect of the consequence and have a clearer view of themselves, others and the world that they live in. In ‘The Great Gatsby’ book, the protagonist Jay Gatsby is revealed to be a classy and wealthy man. It is stated that during his childhood he was quite poor, and was not born into a wealthy or luxurious family. Moreover, Jay Gatsby also experienced the world he lives in after he fought in the war. Gatsby was a mysterious and secretive man that lived a high class community. Furthermore, it quotes “On week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains.” demonstrates through the use of Imagery and a simile, Gatsby’s life was seen as being eventful with the lavish parties he would throw, the cars he drove, the house he lived in, and the woman he was with being Daisy Buchanan. On the other hand, through the relationship Jay Gatsby developed with Nick Carraway, Gatsby faces the consequence when he finds out that his one true love Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan. It states “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your WIFE….Gatsby saw himself standing alone on the last barrier of civilization, as the truth came out about Daisy being married.”  This demonstrates through the use of hyperbole and tone, that Gatsby’s hopes of being with Daisy was very thin, leaving Tom exaggerating about Gatsby’s return into their lives, fearing that he will lose Daisy to Gatsby. As a result, it is clear through the use of hyperbole, tone, Imagery and a simile that Jay Gatsby learns that he must give up trying to be with Daisy, suffer the consequences of being civil with Tom Buchanan and continue to live his wealthy and luxurious life.
